‘Cold Moon’ Delivers 2025’s Final Supermoon Overnight

A near‑perigee full Moon offered a slight boost in size and brightness, assisted by a widely viewed live stream.

Overview

  • The Moon reached full phase at about 00:14–00:15 Italian time on Dec. 5, roughly 12 hours after perigee.
  • At closest approach the distance was near 357,000 kilometers, below the average lunar distance of about 384,000 kilometers.
  • Astronomer Gianluca Masi estimated the disc appeared about 7% larger and 15% brighter than an average full Moon.
  • The Virtual Telescope Project streamed the event from Manciano starting at 21:00 with live commentary by Masi.
  • The full Moon rose in Taurus near the red star Aldebaran and marked the third and final Supermoon of 2025 after the October and November events.
