Overview
- Multiple warnings were issued Saturday evening, including a Severe Thunderstorm Warning with two-inch hail and 60 mph gusts near Lake Powell, a Flash Flood Warning for slot canyons off Hole-in-the-Rock Road, and High Wind Warnings for parts of northern Utah.
- The National Weather Service kept flood watches in place through Saturday night across central, eastern and southern Utah, expanded earlier to include the Uinta Basin with elevated risk on the south slopes of the Uinta Mountains.
- Observed impacts included flash flooding and debris flows in Pine Valley, Dammeron Valley and Veyo, with one flow measured about 150 feet wide and up to 6–8 inches deep on the Santa Clara River gauge.
- A sweeping cold front late Saturday intensified storms with heavy rain, strong winds and isolated severe thunderstorms, dropped temperatures by 10–20 degrees, and lowered snow levels to near 6,000–6,800 feet with several inches possible on high peaks.
- Flash flooding is expected or probable in major recreation areas such as Zion, Lake Powell, Snow Canyon, Grand Staircase–Escalante, Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef, prompting repeated advisories to avoid slot canyons, dry washes and slickrock while local agencies stage sandbags and equipment.
