Cold Front Triggers Night Shelters Across Central Florida

Officials cite National Weather Service forecasts of 20s–30s wind chills to justify temporary openings.

  • Flagler County opened The Sheltering Tree at the Rock Transformation Center for Dec. 29–31 from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m., available to anyone without heat as NWS lows fall below the county’s 40°F threshold.
  • County buses are running two pickup routes with scheduled stops on both the east and west sides of Flagler to transport people to the shelter.
  • Gainesville activated its Cold Night Shelter program with St. Francis House serving families, women and children and GRACE Marketplace serving individual adults while overnight lows stay under 45°F.
  • Orange, Osceola and Lake counties announced additional warming centers for Tuesday and Wednesday nights with posted evening hours and free transit options, including Lynx to the nearest shelter.
  • Meteorologists expect the coldest conditions midweek with wind chills in the 20s and 30s, and officials urged heater and carbon monoxide safety at home.
