Cold Front No. 12 Brings Heavy Rain and Norte Winds to Mexico's Gulf Coast

Forecasts point to impacts spreading into southern Gulf, then the Yucatán coasts by Monday.

Overview

  • The system, interacting with a polar trough and upper-level jets, is delivering heavy to very heavy rain in Veracruz and northern Oaxaca, with strong showers in Puebla, Chiapas, Tabasco, and central Veracruz.
  • A strong Norte is producing 70–80 km/h gusts over the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the coasts of Tamaulipas and Veracruz, with seas near 2.5 meters in the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
  • The associated polar air mass is driving a temperature drop across the north, northeast, east, and center, with possible morning frosts in highlands and minimums of -5 to 0 °C in mountainous areas.
  • While eastern regions turn colder and wetter, Pacific Northwest states including Baja California, Sonora, and Sinaloa remain mostly clear and rain-free with warm conditions along the Pacific coast.
  • Baja California faces sharp local contrasts, with highs of 30–35 °C in several municipalities and lows near -5 to 0 °C in places such as Tijuana and Mexicali, according to the national meteorological service.
