Cold Front Drops Temperatures Across Brazil as Orange Alerts Take Effect

Authorities warn of hazardous winds, heavy rain, coastal flooding, plus lingering interior heat through Oct. 10.

Overview

  • INMET issued an orange ‘Perigo’ alert for a temperature decline greater than 5°C across all of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul and parts of São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais and northern Rio Grande do Sul starting this morning.
  • Coastal and southern zones face storms with heavy rain, lightning and winds of 40–60 km/h, with Baixada Santista cautioned for gusts up to 80 km/h and localized flooding and landslide risk.
  • Santa Catarina’s civil defense highlighted coastal flooding potential due to elevated astronomical tides and southerly winds, with forecast rain rates of 20–30 mm/h or up to 50 mm/day.
  • After Monday’s heat spike—35.1°C in São Paulo city and 40°C in Rio—temperatures fall quickly, with the São Paulo capital near 22°C today and colder midweek as the front advances.
  • Emergency guidance urges residents to avoid flooded areas, seek shelter during storms and steer clear of trees and metal structures, with assistance via Defesa Civil 199 and Fire Department 193.
