Cold Front 19 to Lash Mexico With Intense Rains, Freeze Risk and ‘Norte’ Winds Through Midweek

Officials warn of peak impacts Tuesday and Wednesday, urging precautions for flooding, landslides, coastal surf and cold exposure.

Overview

  • SMN and CONAGUA forecast intense rainfall totals of 75–150 mm, with highest accumulations focused on Chiapas and Tabasco and significant impacts also expected in Veracruz, Oaxaca and Puebla.
  • The system is forecast to remain nearly stationary over the Yucatán Peninsula and the southeast, concentrating the heaviest precipitation there through Wednesday.
  • A polar air mass will drive very cold conditions with minimums near −10°C in mountain zones of Chihuahua and Durango and subfreezing temperatures across central highlands.
  • A strong Norte is expected with gusts up to 80–100 km/h on the Veracruz coast and in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, with 60–80 km/h in Tamaulipas and 40–60 km/h in Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán.
  • Wave heights of 2.5–3.5 meters are forecast in the Gulf of Tehuantepec and along Veracruz, and authorities advise following civil protection guidance as they continue monitoring and updates.
