Cold Front 15 Reaches Northwest Mexico With Snow Risk, Powerful Winds and a Sharp Temperature Drop

SMN cites jet support, a polar trough, upper-level cyclonic flow as the drivers.

Overview

  • Beginning Monday, Nov. 17, the system brings strong winds, scattered showers and a chance of snow or sleet in the sierras of Baja California and northern Sonora.
  • Forecasts for Nov. 18–20 show the front tracking across the northwest and north with very strong to intense winds, heavier showers and expanded snow or sleet potential into Chihuahua and Durango.
  • Overnight minimums are projected to fall to −10 to −5 °C in high mountain zones of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango, with additional frost bands from −5 to 0 °C and 0 to 5 °C in other ranges.
  • Despite the cold surge in the north, highs of 35–40 °C are expected in states including Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, the Isthmus of Chiapas, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosí.
  • From Wednesday, Nov. 19, the probability of rain increases across much of Mexico due to a mid-level anticyclone shifting east, a nearby monsoon trough and Pacific moisture.
