Cold Front 15 Brings Deep Freeze, High Winds and Snow Risk to Northwest Mexico

A second frontal system is forecast to reinforce the cold and wet pattern later this week.

Overview

  • The national weather service reports minimums of -10°C to -5°C in high terrain of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua and Durango from Wednesday into Thursday.
  • Light snow or sleet is probable in those mountain areas as the system interacts with a polar trough, mid–upper cyclonic circulation and the jet streams.
  • Baja California is set for 30–50 km/h wind gusts, 1.5–2.5 meter waves on the west coast and 5–25 mm showers, with reduced visibility and blowing dust on desert roads.
  • A dry line over Coahuila coupled with the subtropical jet will produce very strong wind gusts across parts of the north and northeast.
  • Authorities warn of flooding, landslides, river rises and falling trees during the prolonged event and urge precautions as another front is expected to enter later in the week.
