Cold Front 13 Slams Southeast Mexico With Torrential Rains and Fierce Norte as System Moves Toward the Caribbean

Forecasters warn the arctic air mass will preserve hard freezes and frost through midweek.

Overview

  • By early Tuesday, the front is crossing the Yucatán Peninsula, and SMN/Conagua expect it to enter the Caribbean by night, gradually reducing its direct influence on Mexico.
  • Official forecasts call for torrential rainfall in Veracruz and Oaxaca with intense precipitation in parts of Puebla, Chiapas and Tabasco, raising risks of flooding, landslides and swelling rivers.
  • An intense Norte persists with gusts of 90–110 km/h and 4–5 meter seas on coasts of Tamaulipas, Veracruz and the Isthmus/Gulf of Tehuantepec, with 50–70 km/h along Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo, restricting maritime activity.
  • The arctic air mass is driving minimums from -15 to -10 °C in mountains of Chihuahua and Durango, -10 to -5 °C in Baja California, Nuevo León and Zacatecas, -5 to 0 °C in several central and eastern states, and 0 to 5 °C in others including Mexico City and Oaxaca, with a chance of snow or ice on Pico de Orizaba and Cofre de Perote.
  • Authorities issued safety guidance, set up coordination posts in Puebla, Veracruz and Hidalgo, and suspended in-person classes on Monday in 14,789 schools in Puebla and in 34 municipalities of Hidalgo, while monitoring another system that could approach later this week.
