Cold Front 12 Triggers Heavy Rains and Powerful 'Norte' Winds in Mexico as Argentina Issues Storm and Wind Alerts

Officials warn of flooding, coastal hazards and freezing mornings into early week as the system shifts toward the Yucatán and Caribbean on Monday.

Overview

  • Mexico’s weather service forecast very heavy rain in Veracruz and northern Oaxaca on Sunday, with showers and locally strong storms extending into Puebla, Tabasco, Chiapas and parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.
  • A strong “Norte” is producing wind gusts of 70–90 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, 50–70 km/h along Veracruz, and 35–50 km/h on the Tabasco–Quintana Roo coasts, with seas up to 2.5–3.5 m in Tehuantepec.
  • The associated polar air mass is driving lows down to -5 to 0 °C in higher elevations from Baja California and Chihuahua to the State of Mexico and Puebla, with Mexico City turning cooler, breezy and at times showery.
  • Forecasts highlight sharp regional contrasts, with highs of 30–40 °C along sections of the Pacific and Baja California even as frost risk persists in northern and central mountain zones.
  • In Argentina, the SMN flagged intermittent showers over the Buenos Aires metro easing by night and issued yellow alerts for storms with hail in Misiones and Córdoba and for strong winds and snow in Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, with another spell of instability expected Tuesday.
