Cold, Breezy New Year's Day in Western Pennsylvania After Overnight Snow, With Light Snow Possible Tonight

A weak disturbance tonight could leave a light coating that makes untreated roads slick for the Friday commute.

Overview

  • A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. for most of Western Pennsylvania, with a Winter Storm Warning for the Laurel Highlands in eastern Westmoreland, Fayette, Monongalia, Preston and Garrett counties.
  • Many locations reported about 3 to 5 inches of snow overnight, with slightly higher amounts on hilltops and in higher elevations.
  • Forecasters report the heaviest snow has moved out, with breaks of sunshine developing and lingering flurries mainly north of I-80 and in the higher terrain.
  • Scattered light snow is expected late tonight with totals limited to a coating to around a half-inch, which could produce slick spots on untreated roads Friday morning.
  • Winds are expected to ease over the weekend with dry, cold weather; the Steelers game Sunday night looks cold but snow-free, with a gradual warmup early next week.
