Colaba Police Arrest 1977 Attempt-to-Murder Accused After 48 Years on the Run

A revived probe using modern databases led officers to the long-absconding suspect in Ratnagiri.

Overview

  • Police traced the suspect to Karanjani village in Dapoli, Ratnagiri, and arrested him late on October 13–14 before bringing him back to Mumbai.
  • The case stems from a 1977 stabbing in Colaba registered under Section 307 of the IPC, after which the accused skipped hearings and was declared a proclaimed offender.
  • Investigators linked Election Commission rolls, RTO records including a 2023 licence renewal photo, court files and the IMEI of a mobile phone to confirm identity and location.
  • During interrogation after his arrest, the accused reportedly admitted involvement in the decades-old attack, according to police.
  • He was medically examined, produced before the 10th Sessions Court and remanded to judicial custody until October 17, while police say the victim’s present whereabouts are unknown.
