Coinbase Moves to Bring Everything Exchange to Canada

Unresolved Canadian stablecoin rules and regulator approvals will shape which tokenized stocks and payment services the company can offer

Overview

  • Coinbase says it is preparing to roll out its Everything Exchange in Canada but has not set a launch date and is actively working with Canadian regulators on the plan.
  • The company intends to begin offering tokenized stocks to customers outside the United States soon, and says those tokens will be backed one-for-one by underlying shares with dividend rights and shareholder voting access.
  • Availability of Canadian-dollar stablecoin listings and related payment features is a gating issue because Coinbase says no existing Canadian stablecoin meets local listing standards and legislation could be needed to treat stablecoins as payments.
  • Everything Exchange will bundle crypto trading with new products such as an SEC-registered AI investment adviser, AI trading agents, prediction markets, stock options and pre-IPO offerings, expanding Coinbase beyond spot crypto trading.
  • Coinbase’s push builds on recent regulatory and institutional progress — custody relationships with large asset managers, a conditional OCC trust charter and EU MiCA authorization — and could give Canadians 24/7 access to financial services and faster cross-border transfers if stablecoin rules permit.
