COFEPRIS Orders Removal of Colgate Total Clean Mint From Mexican Market

COFEPRIS has ordered the removal of the Clean Mint variant from shelves as it probes the compound linked to reported oral irritations.

Overview

  • COFEPRIS issued a risk alert on August 4 directing Colgate-Palmolive to withdraw the Total Prevención Activa Clean Mint toothpaste from sale across Mexico in response to reports of oral irritation, gum inflammation and ulcers.
  • The recall applies solely to the Clean Mint variant; other Colgate Total products remain unaffected.
  • Consumers are instructed to halt use immediately, return any remaining tubes to Colgate-Palmolive and report adverse reactions via the COFEPRIS email or the VigiRam platform.
  • Similar bans or recalls have been enacted by ANMAT in Argentina, Anvisa in Brazil, Invima in Colombia and Proconsumidor in the Dominican Republic after thousands of complaints.
  • Authorities and Colgate-Palmolive continue to investigate which ingredient—potentially a flavoring agent or tin-based compound—is triggering the adverse reactions.
