Cody Balmer Pleads Guilty in Firebombing of Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence, Gets 25–50 Years

Prosecutors released surveillance video of the April attack, saying he targeted Josh Shapiro over the governor’s stance on the Gaza war.

Overview

  • Balmer admitted to attempted murder, aggravated arson, terrorism, burglary and 22 arson counts, one for each person endangered inside the residence.
  • Judge Deborah Curcillo accepted a plea agreement setting a 25- to 50-year term with parole eligibility no earlier than April 13, 2050.
  • Courtroom video shows him scaling a fence, smashing windows with a sledgehammer, throwing Molotov cocktails and striking doors toward occupied rooms.
  • Shapiro, his wife, three children, two state troopers and at least 15 guests were inside during the pre-dawn attack, and all evacuated without injury.
  • Officials say the incident prompted an independent security review, visible perimeter and staffing upgrades, and multi-million-dollar repairs to the state-owned residence.
