Code Yellow Issued for Dense Fog in Northern Netherlands

Poor early-morning visibility threatened traffic safety, prompting extra caution from authorities.

Overview

  • The KNMI issued the code yellow warning Friday morning and set it to run roughly from 06:00 to 09:00.
  • Dense fog was reported in Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and parts of Utrecht, with visibility about 99 metres in Eelde and around 200 metres in De Bilt.
  • The KNMI warned that visibility below 400 metres can hinder traffic and that conditions under 200 metres are dangerous, and it urged drivers to slow down and leave more distance to the vehicle ahead.
  • Weeronline and the ANWB said the fog should clear after sunrise while spotty mist banks may linger across much of the country outside the south.
  • Radiation fog forms on calm, clear nights in low-lying or sheltered areas, which explains the regional concentration and suggests the hazard will be short lived once the sun warms the air.
