Cocaine Use in France Nearly Doubles to 1.1 Million Annual Users in 2023
A new report highlights record consumption, increased global production, and shifting social perceptions of cocaine in France.
- The Observatoire Français des Drogues et des Tendances Addictives (OFDT) reports 1.1 million people in France consumed cocaine at least once in 2023, nearly double the 600,000 reported in 2022.
- Global cocaine production, primarily in Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru, reached an all-time high of 2,700 tonnes in 2022, contributing to greater availability in France.
- French authorities seized a record 47 tonnes of cocaine in the first 11 months of 2024, compared to 23.5 tonnes in 2023 and just 4.1 tonnes in 2010.
- Changing work conditions, with some workers using cocaine to cope with job demands, and the normalization of cocaine’s image have contributed to its rising use.
- France now ranks 7th in Europe for cocaine consumption, with the drug's purity increasing significantly from 46% in 2011 to 73% in 2023, while prices have remained stable.
