Coastal Low Pummels Sydney and Eastern NSW as Rescues Surge and System Moves Offshore

More than 850 requests for help were logged, with crews now pivoting to dangerous surf as gales linger during a gradual easing.

Overview

  • The NSW SES handled 854 calls in 24 hours and conducted 34 flood rescues, including bushwalkers at Wattamolla and multiple operations across eastern Sydney.
  • Torrential totals through Thursday morning included 147mm at Cronulla, 122mm at Newport, 104.8mm at Observatory Hill and 83.2mm at Sydney Airport.
  • A tornado northwest of Young was confirmed by the Bureau and captured on a Rural Fire Service tower camera, with another reported near Caragabal.
  • Hazardous surf warnings remain for much of the coast with police urging people to stay out of the water, and winds up to 90 km/h are forecast for the Hunter, Mid North Coast and Northern Tablelands.
  • Forecasters expect the low to shift offshore near Jervis Bay with conditions easing from the south, though local flooding, coastal erosion and some transport disruptions persist.
