Coast Guard Rescues Person Off Falmouth After Ferry Sighting in Rough Seas

Investigators are working to determine how the person entered the water during a nor’easter.

Overview

  • The individual was first spotted around 3:30 p.m. near Juniper Point by Steamship Authority ferry Island Home, whose crew and passengers threw lighted life rings and circled to keep eyes on the person.
  • Poor visibility and choppy seas from the nor’easter complicated the response as local fire, police, Environmental Police and the Coast Guard launched a coordinated search.
  • A Coast Guard helicopter located the person near Nobska Point at about 4:25 p.m., deployed a rescue swimmer and hoisted the individual to safety.
  • The person was taken to Joint Base Cape Cod and then transported to Falmouth Hospital for exposure, with injuries not considered life‑threatening and an expected recovery.
  • Authorities said the person had been aboard the ferry Nantucket before being seen from Island Home, and Falmouth police are investigating the circumstances.
