Overview
- The Coast Guard said Thursday it detected the Russian Navy auxiliary intelligence ship Kareliya on Oct. 29 about 15 nautical miles south of Oahu.
- An HC-130 Hercules from Air Station Barbers Point and the cutter William Hart executed a safe, professional overflight and surface transit to observe the vessel.
- Officials stated the ship was operating beyond the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea under international law and that the U.S. response was routine.
- Monitoring of the vessel continues in coordination with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and interagency partners to protect maritime traffic and support homeland defense.
- The Kareliya is a Vishnya-class signals-intelligence collector with satellite data links and limited defensive arms, which is why its proximity draws scrutiny.
