Coal India’s June Production Falls 8.5% on Monsoon Disruptions

The first quarter shortfall raises doubts about Coal India’s ability to meet its FY 2025-26 output target of 875 million tonnes.

Overview

  • Coal India logged 57.8 million tonnes of coal in June, down 8.5% from 63.1 million tonnes a year earlier.
  • All eight of its subsidiaries reported year-on-year production declines in June, with drops ranging from 0.8% to 29.8%.
  • Cumulative output for April–June dipped 3.2% to 183.3 million tonnes, while June offtake fell 7.4% to 60.4 million tonnes.
  • Industry experts attribute the slump to monsoon rains that typically hinder mining activity and reduce dispatches to power plants.
  • Coal India has set FY 2025-26 targets of 875 million tonnes in production and 900 million tonnes in offtake.
