CO Poisoning in Hamburg Forces 370-Kilometer Ambulance Transfer for Pregnant Woman and Partner

Helicopter rescue was grounded by ice after hospitals nearby reported no available hyperbaric capacity.

Overview

  • Emergency crews were called around 22:45 on Dec. 26 to a semi-detached house on Eckerkoppel in Hamburg’s Farmsen-Berne neighborhood after a 28-year-old pregnant woman collapsed.
  • Paramedics’ carbon monoxide detectors alarmed on entry, and fire crews measured extremely high concentrations, with the highest readings reported in the cellar.
  • Both the woman and her 29-year-old partner were assessed as severely injured and in need of immediate hyperbaric treatment.
  • With no regional hospital able to accept hyperbaric patients and helicopters grounded by icy temperatures, two ambulances transported the couple roughly 360–370 kilometers to Halle (Saale).
  • Authorities evacuated the residence, prohibited further use, and cited a defective gas boiler as the suspected source; officials did not provide an update on the patients’ conditions.
