CNN Hires Elex Michaelson to Anchor Live L.A. Late-Night Newscast Starting Mid-October

The Burbank production creates a live post‑midnight Eastern foothold to tap West Coast newsmakers.

Overview

  • The weeknight program will air 9–11 p.m. PT (midnight–2 a.m. ET) and will also run on CNN International in Europe and Asia.
  • The two-hour broadcast will be produced live from CNN’s studios on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, with a launch slated for mid-October and no public title yet.
  • It will be the only live cable news show in the post‑midnight Eastern slot, where competitors typically air repeats.
  • Michaelson, a veteran California political journalist from KTTV and KABC who created The Issue Is, says the Los Angeles base will help secure guests from politics, entertainment, technology and sports.
  • The show marks CNN’s first Los Angeles–based national program since Larry King Live, with the network having previously offered the overnight role to Jim Acosta before his departure.
