CNG Supply Returns In Mumbai After 48-Hour Pipeline Fix

Commuters still faced long lines at pumps during a slow restart.

Overview

  • Gas flow to MGL’s Wadala city gate was restored around 4 pm Tuesday after repairs to a damaged GAIL pipeline, with supply resuming to stations in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.
  • Large numbers of CNG taxis, autorickshaws and app-based cabs stayed off the roads through much of Tuesday, leading to sparse availability and lengthy queues at refueling points.
  • Reports from pumps and the airport described drivers refusing short trips or charging steep surcharges, with some passengers asked to pay up to ₹500 above normal fares.
  • School and college travel was disrupted as more than a thousand CNG school buses were idled, and the School Bus Owners’ Association arranged private buses to keep classes running.
  • BEST kept services near normal by drawing on depot fuel stocks and its electric fleet, while station owners estimated losses above ₹35 crore and driver unions sought compensation.
