CNA Raises Daytime Releases at Cointzio Dam to 15 m³/s to Curb Flood Risk in Morelia

Officials set a daylight-only increase to align outflows with measured river capacity during rains from Priscila.

Overview

  • The reservoir stands near full at about 3 million cubic meters, or 95.75% of capacity, according to CNA regional director Roberto Arias.
  • CNA will lift controlled releases to up to 15 m3/s from 06:00 to 18:00 and return to 10 m3/s overnight to avoid surprise flooding and ease any response needs.
  • The plan is based on real-time downstream conditions, including reported levels of 1.45 meters in the Río Chiquito and 1.70 meters in the Río Grande.
  • State and local agencies, including the Government of Michoacán (CEAC), Morelia’s municipal government, Protección Civil and Bomberos, agreed on the measures under CNA coordination.
  • Authorities aim to prevent overloading rivers and drains in critical low-lying western areas of Morelia, with broader river surveillance ongoing in Michoacán.
