Overview

  • CMS sent the first monthly enrollment reports on Aug. 19, initiating recurring state reviews of Medicaid and CHIP enrollees whose status could not be confirmed.
  • States must verify the citizenship or immigration status of flagged individuals, request documentation if needed, take appropriate actions that may include adjusting coverage, and report results to CMS each month.
  • The verification process compares state records with federal sources including the Social Security Administration and DHS’s SAVE program.
  • HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said the effort safeguards taxpayer funds and ensures benefits go only to eligible people.
  • The initiative follows a February order from President Donald Trump and new verification mandates, as a multistate lawsuit led by New York AG Letitia James proceeds and a judge bars HHS from sharing enrollee data with immigration authorities.
