CMMC to End Trauma-Center Verification, Leaving Maine With Two ACS-Verified Hospitals

Maine EMS routing guidance prioritizes trauma centers within a 45-minute transport window.

Overview

  • Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston will stop seeking American College of Surgeons trauma-center verification effective Dec. 1, 2025.
  • Maine will have two ACS-verified trauma centers: Maine Medical Center in Portland (Level I) and Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor (Level II).
  • CMMC will continue operating as a trauma system hospital with the ability to evaluate patients, provide consultation, and arrange transfers.
  • A Maine EMS bulletin issued Nov. 5 instructs crews to bring high- or moderate-risk trauma patients to a trauma center when total transport time is under 45 minutes.
  • If transport to a trauma center exceeds 45 minutes, patients should be taken to the nearest trauma system hospital, of which there are about 30 statewide.
