CME Launches CFTC-Approved Solana and XRP Options as First Trades Cross

The contracts are physically settled into existing futures with daily, monthly or quarterly expirations.

Overview

  • Trading went live on October 13 on CME’s U.S. platform under CFTC oversight, extending regulated crypto options beyond bitcoin and ether.
  • The inaugural block trades included Wintermute and Superstate for XRP on October 12 and Cumberland DRW and Galaxy for Solana on October 13, according to CME.
  • Options are available in both standard and micro contract sizes, giving institutions and smaller participants flexible exposure.
  • The products settle into corresponding CME SOL and XRP futures, aligning pricing and facilitating position management across the suite.
  • CME pointed to strong 2025 futures activity—about 540,000 SOL contracts (~$22.3B notional) since March and 370,000 XRP (~$16.2B) since May—as a foundation for the launch, with plans to pursue 24/7 availability subject to regulatory review.
