CMA Provisional Ruling Grants £556m to Five Water Firms, Lifting Bills by About 3%

The decision remains provisional pending consultation following company appeals to Ofwat's price review.

Overview

  • Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Wessex Water together serving about 14.7 million customers won a provisional £556m, or 21% of what they sought.
  • The extra allowance translates to average bill increases of roughly 3% on top of Ofwat’s previously approved rises for 2025–30.
  • Company-specific additions were set at Anglian and Northumbrian +1%, Southern +3%, South East +4% and Wessex +5%.
  • The CMA said the additional revenue would support supply resilience, pollution reduction and higher financing costs.
  • These redeterminations are not final, with a consultation now under way before the CMA issues its final decisions; Thames Water’s separate appeal remains paused during restructuring talks.
