CM Says Modi to Open Mizoram Rail Link on Sept. 13 After Trial Runs

Safety clearance following trial runs positions the 51.38 km line for a September start with diesel-hauled trains.

Overview

  • Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the Prime Minister’s Sept. 13 inauguration at Sairang, with a Sept. 12 arrival in Aizawl, while officials note PMO confirmation is still awaited.
  • The Commissioner of Railway Safety inspected the route in June and authorised Northeast Frontier Railway to operate both passenger and freight services.
  • NFR says initial services will roll out this month with one or two diesel-hauled trains, and electrification is planned in a later phase.
  • Trial operations have been conducted, including a media run on August 22, as final preparations move the project from construction to service.
  • The new line connects Aizawl to India’s rail network via Sairang and features 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and a pier about 104 metres high, underscoring a challenging build in mountainous terrain.
