Cloudbursts Pound Uttarakhand as North India Floods Disrupt Travel and Rescue

  • At least five people were killed and eleven are missing in Uttarakhand after overnight cloudbursts triggered landslides in Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Bageshwar, with families feared trapped under debris.
  • The JammuSrinagar highway stayed closed for a fourth day due to multiple landslides in the UdhampurRamban belt, stranding more than 2,000 vehicles as BRO teams worked to clear the route.
  • The ChandigarhManali corridor remained blocked in Mandi district after washouts, leaving hundreds of trucks and tourist vehicles stuck and causing spoilage of perishable cargo.
  • IMD issued red alerts for Bageshwar, Chamoli, Dehradun and Rudraprayag with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall, and orange alerts for several other Uttarakhand districts.
  • NDRF, SDRF, Army and local agencies are conducting rescues and evacuations across multiple states, with Punjab reporting thousands moved to safety and relief delivered by boats and drones.
