Cloudburst Triggers Destructive Flash Floods in Chamoli’s Tharali, With One Feared Dead and Roads Cut Off

  • Debris swept through the tehsil complex, the SDM’s residence and market areas, with 30–40 homes in Tharali and a similar number in Chepdo reported inundated or damaged.
  • A 20-year-old woman identified as Kavita was buried under debris in Sagwara and a man named Joshi was reported missing in Chepdo, according to district officials.
  • SDRF and NDRF teams deployed overnight were slowed by blocked approach roads as the Army, ITBP and police joined operations, relief camps were opened and helicopter assistance was sought.
  • The KarnaprayagGwaldam highway was shut near Ming Gadhera and the Tharali–Sagwara and Dungri roads were closed; schools and anganwadi centres in affected blocks were ordered shut.
  • IMD maintained an orange alert for Uttarakhand as parallel search operations continued in J&K’s Kishtwar for 36 people missing after the Aug 14 disaster, with the death toll there cited at about 65.
