Overview

  • An overnight cloudburst inundated Tharali in Chamoli, pushing debris into the tehsil complex, Tharali market and the SDM’s residence after the Tunri Gadhera overflowed into the Pindar River.
  • Officials said a 20-year-old woman named Kavita died after being buried in Sagwara, and a man identified as Joshi is missing from the Chepdon area.
  • NDRF, SDRF, police and Indian Army teams are on the ground with relief camps opened, but the KarnaprayagGwaldam highway near Ming Gadhera and the Tharali–Sagwara and Dungri roads remain blocked.
  • Schools were closed across three development blocks as one to two feet of sludge covered streets and courtyards and vehicles were left buried under rubble.
  • In Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar, recovery operations continue a week after the Chashoti disaster, with 62 of 65 victims identified, many still unaccounted for, and the cause still under investigation as cloudburst versus lake outburst.
