Climber Found Dead on Mount Whitney After Missing Motel Checkout

An early storm left the technical Mountaineer’s Route snow-covered, delaying recovery until crews could hoist the climber off the mountain by helicopter.

Overview

  • Motel staff in Lone Pine reported a guest overdue on Oct. 19 after the person failed to check out and left personal belongings behind.
  • Deputies found the individual’s vehicle at Whitney Portal and confirmed a wilderness permit showing the climber planned to attempt the technical Mountaineer’s Route on Oct. 18.
  • A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted a deceased climber along the Mountaineer’s Route on Oct. 20, but a storm that brought snow and hazardous high-elevation conditions delayed recovery efforts.
  • On Sunday, Oct. 25, Inyo County Search and Rescue reached the site near Iceberg Lake at about 13,600 feet, recovered remains covered in snow, and a CHP helicopter hoisted the body for transfer to the Inyo County Coroner’s Office for identification.
  • The Mountaineer’s Route is a steep, exposed off-trail line that raises objective hazards such as loose rock and early-season ice, and officials say permits and coordinated aerial and volunteer SAR teams were key to locating and recovering the climber.
