Overview
- At noon on August 1, heavy rain undermined a sandstone overhang above a stormwater culvert, causing large boulders to crash onto Bronte Beach
- No injuries were reported as the beach was largely empty because of rainy conditions
- A stormwater drain and a safety rail beneath the collapsed section sustained significant damage
- Waverley Council staff and Bronte lifeguards quickly secured the site, established an exclusion zone and alerted emergency authorities
- A geotechnical assessment is now under way to evaluate cliff stability and advise on any necessary expansion of the restricted area
