Cleveland Raises Downtown Meter Rates, Extends Enforcement to Nights and Weekends Starting in January

Officials say the changes target turnover to channel new revenue into street-safety improvements.

Overview

  • Starting in January, meters downtown will use an escalating structure—$1.50 for each of the first two hours, $3 for the third and $4.50 for the fourth—for a four-hour, $10.50 maximum.
  • Enforcement expands to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily downtown, with Ohio City adopting the same hours except Sundays, ending many free evenings after 6 p.m.
  • Two-hour curbside limits are being replaced with a four-hour cap to increase turnover while giving shoppers and diners more flexibility.
  • The city pledges to reinvest higher meter revenue in street lighting, crosswalks and speed tables to improve pedestrian and driver safety.
  • Event-area zones around stadiums will continue with rates up to $8 per hour, Sunday paid street parking applies only downtown, and officials are weighing camera-based enforcement that has not yet been brought to City Council.
