Overview

• David Jewell, 45, an off-duty Edgewater police officer, was found fatally shot inside the Circle K around 4 p.m. Monday at Ocean Shore Boulevard and Wisteria Drive.
• The Volusia Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Eduardo Felipe Labrada Machado, 24, a store clerk who was taken into custody and is expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday.
• Investigators say surveillance footage shows Machado leaving the store, retrieving a jacket from his car, returning, and then shooting Jewell multiple times.
• Sheriff Chitwood described the killing as an assassination and said the shooter’s firearm appeared to jam before additional shots were fired, a detail still being reviewed by investigators.
• Authorities believe Jewell and Machado knew each other, have interviewed witnesses including a second Circle K employee detained at the scene, and continue to examine video and forensic evidence.
