Class 1 Student in Bhowanipore Hospitalised After Snakebite at School

Health officials suspect a venomous bite, forest teams are searching the school, the chief minister cited withheld maintenance grants as he ordered an inquiry.

Overview

  • A seven-year-old pupil at Mitra Institution in Bhowanipore was bitten inside the school and taken to SSKM Medical College and Hospital where doctors gave anti-venom and moved the child to the paediatric ICU.
  • Hospital officials said the child was in critical condition after treatment and ordered blood tests to detect venom as staff monitor organ and clotting function.
  • Forest department and Wild Animal Rescue teams inspected classrooms, storerooms and CCTV footage but did not find the snake, and police and school authorities closed the campus for further searches and cleaning.
  • Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari spoke with doctors, has promised an inquiry, and pointed to three years of withheld composite grants used for cleaning supplies as a factor in school maintenance.
  • The incident follows a school snakebite in Kolkata last week and has focused attention on monsoon-driven snake movements, the uncertainty over species (some officials suspect a Russell’s viper), and the need for clear school emergency protocols and prompt hospital care.
