CJP Leaders Remanded for Five Days and Placed in Separate Tihar Cells

Police say the move follows an alleged breach of the denotified Jantar Mantar and is being used as preventive action to curb further public-order violations.

Overview

  • Party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after they and other activists allegedly breached barricades to enter Jantar Mantar by trespassing through a private premise on Tuesday, raised slogans and erected a flag.
  • A Special Executive Magistrate remanded Das and Ranka to five days' judicial custody after considering a preventive police report and previous bonds that required them to maintain peace.
  • Delhi Police registered an FIR at Connaught Place and detained 14 people in the incident, while associate Ajinkya Shinde was released on a personal bond with a surety.
  • On arrival at Tihar Jail the two leaders were lodged in separate, closely supervised cells with restricted movement and standard undertrial facilities, officials said, to protect them and reduce friction with other inmates.
  • The arrests follow an escalation of Cockroach Janta Party street protests over alleged voter-list irregularities and calls for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation, and the detentions could either deter further breaches or fuel larger demonstrations though no mass mobilization has been reported so far.
