CJI Lays Foundation for Rangmahal Judicial Complex as Gauhati HC Bar Boycotts

Officials call the North Guwahati campus a long-term upgrade linked to future connectivity.

Overview

  • Chief Justice of India Surya Kant launched construction at Rangmahal and said opposition to the project stems from misinformation or vested interests.
  • The Assam cabinet approved Rs 479 crore for phase one, with a total outlay of about Rs 1,700 crore planned for the 148-bigha campus.
  • Plans include 31 High Court courtrooms with scope for 15 more, 300 advocates’ chambers, seating for 2,000 lawyers, 65 lower courts, a 1,000-seat auditorium, a hospital and extensive parking.
  • The Gauhati High Court Bar Association boycotted the ceremony, held hunger strikes at the current Uzan Bazar site and is considering a legal challenge to the relocation.
  • The state cites Brahmaputra riverfront redevelopment needs and a new bridge slated for February that the chief minister says will cut travel to the site to 20–25 minutes.
