City Power Alleges Sabotage of Johannesburg Streetlights Before G20 Summit

The utility points to re-damage without theft, urging intensified law-enforcement patrols.

Overview

  • City Power reports a pattern of newly repaired lights being destroyed within days without components stolen, which it says suggests intentional sabotage.
  • The most affected corridors include the M1 between Southgate and Killarney, the M2 in both directions, Joe Slovo Drive and Malibongwe Drive.
  • A spot inspection found lights working on the M1 double-decker section at night and then turned off or chopped down by the next morning with cables left hanging.
  • The utility has asked the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Service to step up patrols and surveillance and warned contractors they face prosecution if implicated.
  • Motives and perpetrators remain unconfirmed, and City Power says the destruction is undermining preparations to illuminate key routes before the G20 summit scheduled for November 22–23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
