City Heights Resident Killed by Falling Tree Limb as High Winds Sweep San Diego County

Officials say the cause of the tree failure remains under investigation.

Overview

  • A large section of a tree fell around 10:55–11 a.m. at Marlborough Avenue and Wightman Street, with the tree splitting into three pieces and a limb estimated at about 30 feet striking the victim.
  • Firefighters freed the man, believed to be in his 60s or 70s, and provided aid, but he died at the scene after going into cardiac arrest, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.
  • San Diego Gas & Electric reported thousands of outages across the county around noon, with most listed causes still unknown.
  • Other wind-related damage was reported around the same time, including a large Chipotle/Starbucks sign that fell onto two cars in National City and downed trees in Imperial Beach and Black Mountain Ranch.
  • A wind advisory covered coastal and inland valleys with gusts forecast at 20–35 mph and up to 45 mph, and an Airport Weather Warning was in effect for gusts of 30 knots or greater from late morning into early afternoon.
