City Council Committee Approves Partial Landmarking of St. Adalbert’s Church Complex

Zoning’s decision secures landmark status only for the sanctuary, clearing the way for People Church’s purchase through a process that leaves surrounding buildings up to the full council

Overview

  • The City Council’s Zoning Committee voted on June 17 to landmark solely the church’s sanctuary, excluding the rectory, convent and school.
  • People Church, a non-denominational congregation, plans to restore the century-old sanctuary following a sale approved under the limited landmark designation.
  • The Archdiocese of Chicago, which closed St. Adalbert’s in 2019 due to dwindling attendance, has supported a restricted landmarking approach to facilitate the sale.
  • Preservation groups including the Society of St. Adalbert and Save Our Catholic Churches are pushing to extend protection to the entire campus for its cultural and architectural value.
  • A final vote by the full City Council is expected later this month to determine whether the remaining campus structures receive landmark status.
