Overview
- Lawmakers voted 36–9 to authorize a lease at Jacobi Medical Center for the Just Home project, overriding local member Kristy Marmorato in the Council’s first break from member deference since 2021.
- First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro told the Council the mayor will not approve use of the Jacobi grounds and urged leaders to deem the application withdrawn.
- The administration says it will seek other sites, pointing to possible locations near Brooklyn’s Broadway Junction and suggesting Jacobi could host housing not reserved for people leaving jail.
- The H+H board approved the land disposition in January 2024, Council leaders say that action stands, while City Hall argues the Council vote is meaningless and agencies are not obligated to proceed.
- The Fortune Society, slated to operate 58 supportive units and 25 affordable apartments, says it has not been contacted about alternative locations.
