Ciro Gomes Rules Out Another Presidential Run After Four Bids

He framed the move as a reaction to Brazil’s polarized leadership, saying he doubts anyone currently can fix the problems he believes it has created.

Overview

  • In an interview with Rádio Itatiaia on September 18, Ciro Gomes said he does not intend to be a candidate again and does not want to bother voters.
  • The former governor and ex-minister ran for president in 1998, 2002, 2018 and 2022, finishing fourth in the last race with about 3% of valid votes.
  • On September 15, the Ceará Electoral Court rejected a request for his preventive detention but ordered him not to make offensive or injurious references to Crateús mayor Janaína Faria, with a R$10,000 fine per violation.
  • The legal case stems from an August comment in which he insinuated the mayor recruited young women for sexual services for Education Minister Camilo Santana, a remark made at an event for former Fortaleza mayor Roberto Cláudio.
  • Reports say PSDB and União Brasil have sounded him out about party moves, yet he has not signaled any change or a new candidacy.
