Circle Moves to Deploy USDC in 40–50 Emerging Markets

Circle plans to scale USDC into new markets ahead of the GENIUS Act to seize rising demand for digital-dollar payments.

Overview

  • The company announced on Friday that it will push USDC into roughly 40 to 50 emerging and developing countries to expand on-chain payments in regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
  • USDC had about $73.3 billion in circulation in Q2 2026 and holds roughly a quarter of the stablecoin market, compared with nearly 60% for Tether’s USDT.
  • Circle is backing the drive with a planned $400 million purchase of Tazapay expected to close in 2027 and a reported $100 million strategic investment from Binance, and it already holds a U.S. federal bank/trust charter obtained in July 2026.
  • The company pays heavy distribution fees: Circle reported $819 million paid to partners and transaction costs in the first half of 2026, about 59% of revenue, leaving roughly $98 million in net profit and exposing its expansion to margin pressure.
  • If successful, the push could speed real-world use of digital dollars for cross-border payments and AI-driven machine-to-machine microtransactions, while the U.S. GENIUS Act taking effect in January 2027 could further legitimize regulated stablecoins but also raise competition from banks and heighten security and fraud risks.
