Cinemark, IMAX To Add Three 70mm Film Sites and Expand Laser Upgrades Before Nolan’s The Odyssey

The move expands access to the scarce 1.43:1 film format as IMAX refurbishes existing 70mm units for a July 2026 rollout.

Overview

  • Under a new 17-location pact, Cinemark will install IMAX 70mm film capability at Seven Bridges (Woodridge, IL), Carefree Circle (Colorado Springs, CO), and Tinseltown (Rochester, NY).
  • The agreement also adds four new IMAX with Laser systems in the U.S. and upgrades 12 existing IMAX screens to IMAX with Laser across Cinemark’s circuit.
  • Cinemark and IMAX say the new film and laser sites are slated to be operational before The Odyssey opens on July 17, 2026.
  • IMAX confirmed to Forbes that the 70mm film projectors being deployed are existing units being brought back to operational readiness.
  • With only about 30 venues worldwide able to show IMAX 70mm today, early sellouts for The Odyssey’s 70mm engagements and exhibitors’ broader PLF push highlight demand for premium theatrical experiences.
