CIDCO Marks First Tunnel Breakthrough on Hetawane Water Project in Navi Mumbai

Work on Package-1 has reached 5.52 km of an 8.7 km drive to move the scheme toward 270 MLD capacity.

Overview

  • The breakthrough occurred at Shaft-4 in Wahal village under Water Tunnel Package-1 executed by AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd.
  • The alignment sits about 100 metres underground through amygdaloidal basalt, forcing teams to manage tight space, complex installations and difficult muck movement.
  • AFCONS reported monthly national tunnelling advances of 777 metres with the 3.2-metre TBM ‘Flamingo’, surpassing its earlier 714-metre mark.
  • AFCONS says it is targeting completion six months ahead of schedule, a goal CIDCO leaders acknowledged during the on-site event.
  • The Hetawane scheme includes a 13.25 km raw-water tunnel and a 15.4 km treated-water tunnel to expand supply to 270 MLD, with reports differing on the current baseline at 120 or 150 MLD.
