Church of England Names Sarah Mullally First Woman Archbishop of Canterbury

The appointment follows last year’s resignation of Justin Welby over criticism of the church’s abuse response.

Overview

  • The Church announced the decision on Oct. 3 after a nomination by senior church figures and approval by King Charles.
  • Mullally, 63, is due to take up the office in March 2026.
  • Her selection comes after Justin Welby stepped down in November 2024 following criticism of the response to allegations that male church-related figures abused boys.
  • A former nurse who later entered the clergy, Mullally has served as Bishop of London since 2018.
  • The Archbishop of Canterbury is the Church of England’s senior bishop and a symbolic leader for an Anglican Communion estimated at about 85 million believers.
