Church and Officials Condemn 'Padre Pistolas' After Threat to Guanajuato Governor Over Water Plan

The uproar centers on a contested plan to pipe water from Presa Solís to Guanajuato’s industrial corridor.

Overview

  • In a Nov. 2 homily captured on video, priest Alfredo Gallegos (“El Padre Pistolas”) used profane language to threaten Governor Libia Dennise García and urged people to take up arms in opposition to the Presa Solís–Solís-León aqueduct project.
  • Governor García condemned the remarks as unacceptable but said she will not file a legal complaint, stating she will focus on her work and continue denouncing violence against women.
  • The federal Women’s Secretariat, led by Citlalli Hernández, publicly rejected the threats and expressed solidarity with the governor, while PAN leaders called for an investigation and possible sanctions, framing the episode as political gender violence.
  • The Mexican bishops’ conference (CEM) reproved the priest’s violent and disparaging expressions and urged clergy to speak with respect and compassion, as the video continued circulating widely on social media.
  • Later, Gallegos released his own video denying misogyny, offering no apology, and doubling down on his opposition to the Acueducto Solís–León, which he argues would harm local communities’ access to water.
